Anbernic RG 557: a portable device designed for modern emulation

This week, ANBERNIC officially unveiled the RG 557 in a YouTube video. The new device features an ergonomic handle and a 5.5-inch AMOLED screen with 1920x1080 resolution. You won't be lost for words by its ergonomics, which echo the design of Xbox controllers.

The video shows an impressive range of games, from Wii U titles to PSP and PS2 emulation, while suggesting that the RG 557 is capable of delivering AAA titles and PC games in emulation. Images are remarkably sharp, and PSP game emulation benefits from advanced scaling, offering surprising visual quality.

The screen size is particularly well suited to PSP games and modern consoles, offering a pleasant gaming experience. However, for older consoles such as the Game Boy (+color and advance) and Game Gear, the RG 557 does not seem optimal.

With this model, ANBERNIC seems to want to position itself against high-end emulation devices such as SteamDeck. The market for devices capable of emulating retrogaming consoles is already well supplied (by Anbernic too) and it seems that the company wants to move towards slightly more powerful devices, although the market is also well served at this level.

The exact specifications of the RG 557 have yet to be fully revealed, but it's reasonable to assume that RAM and storage will have been upgraded slightly from the previous model, the RG 556, which came with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The price also remains a mystery at this stage.

Warning, Recalbox does not currently support this console. If you want a Recalbox-compatible handheld console, go to this link.
